Pizza Box Art

June 27, 2011 by John Norwood 2 Comments

When we have family or friends over, we typically order pizza from Cascarinos Pizza in College Point (The Original !). It’s local and it’s the best pizza. But, when we’re done, I can not just throw out the perfectly square pizza boxes. So, I’ve started turning my collection of used pizza boxes from Cascarinos into art pieces. I’ve glued together the pizza boxes we have and painted them either black or orange. These pizza box art pieces can each be hung on a wall.

I am not sure where to put these yet, maybe I can convince the owners of Cascarinos to hang them in their restaurant ;). We’ll be be back for more pizza at Cascarinos, so pizza box art will become an expanding part of my collection. Stay tuned.

Tower of Packaged Food Boxes

June 25, 2011 by John Norwood Leave a Comment

Packaged foods come in elaborately designed boxes , which have been scrutinized and tweaked by well-funded marketing and advertising departments for decades so that they stand out and say “buy-me”, in the canyon like supermarket aisles where they’re found. Not only do these designs move shoppers to buy them, their bright and attractive colors, and bold patterns make interesting art pieces when framed in black. The contrast with black makes those colors and patterns come alive even more.

I recently gathered some packaged food boxes (and a couple of other boxes) that were destined for recycle, framed each in black paint and then stacked them – a Tower of Packaged Food Boxes. I normally work with silver, orange, black and white, but like the colors already found in these boxes.

I recently read an article in Good Magazine titled “Zero-Packaging Grocery Store to Open in Austin, Texas“. The new grocery store is In.gredients and shoppers fill their own containers with food rather than purchasing them pre-packaged. Great sustainability concept but not great for my recycled art.  If this concept takes of, I’ll need to find different materials.

Painted Cardboard Canvas

June 24, 2011 by John Norwood Leave a Comment

This is a panel from a cardboard box for some appliance or possibly piece of furniture we purchased and assembled from IKEA. I have always liked silver and bright orange together. The added black makes the panel look worn and dirty, which it was from shipping. It was either turn it into a painted canvas or toss it into a landfill for this piece of cardboard. Some may say the former would have been better but I can not help myself from attempting to create something unique and artistic.

Suspended Infinity

June 22, 2011 by John Norwood Leave a Comment

This piece is actually called Infinity Intercourse but I did not want the title of this post to be flagged as porn. But who knows, maybe Larry Flint will see it and offer me a job alongside Anthony Weiner.

Infinity Intercourse, although I do like the sound of Suspended Infinity, is insulation foam molded into an infinity loop and then painted white. I have a few other infinity loop pieces but I particularly like how this looks against a black background. The great thing about insulation foam is that it’s very pliable and light, making it a great material to hang once it’s transformed into art.

1776 Dunkin Donuts Coffee Cups

June 18, 2011 by John Norwood Leave a Comment

I enjoy Dunkin Donuts Coffee and have amassed a collection of their small coffee cups. What better to with them than create a multi-tower structure and call it recycled art. There are 1776 cups here (originally 1760 but I added the final 16 to be patriotic as we near the 4th of July). Some day I may paint these, but for now, they’ll remain in their original design. Here’s to making the donuts!
