Marlboro Pyramids, Round 2

June 16, 2011 by John Norwood Leave a Comment

I recently finished another round of pyramids made from Marlboro cigarette packs. I could probably choose a healthier habit but it is what it is and I am trying to make something artistic out of it, rather than adding more waste to our crowded dumps.

Foamed Shoes and a Marriage Proposal

June 4, 2011 by John Norwood 1 Comment

I recently completed an engagement announcement for a young couple that came to see my studio. They scheduled a time to visit after they saw my Iraqi Veteran Burn Victim in a blog post titled “Seven Incredible Cigarette Art Pieces Portraying People and Animals“, by Caz Davidson from 1800recycling.com. The groom-to-be, Joshua, was going to propose to his girlfriend (now fiancee), Violet, and asked me to come up with something. So, I created “Violet Will You Marry Me” out of cigarette butts. Violet did say yes and the happy couple will be getting married this summer. Congratulations Joshua and Violet! May your marriage be as wonderful and long lasting as my marriage with Ruby. BTW… I’ll order the steak for the reception dinner – joke.

They also bought a sculpture, which was a pair of my shoes with insulation foam coming out of them. Thank you. I am thinking about producing a line of these shoes and even having people send or donate their shoes to me so that I can foam them. What do you think?

Outside of aiding along matrimony, I am still working on Marlboro pyramids, which are influenced by Warhol’s soup cans and of course an endless supply of materials from my “healthy” habit. I am sitting here gluing packs of cigarettes together and wondering whether there is any point. I do think it will be a magnificent work but I just keep creating. Anyone know anyone at Marlboro/Altria? I am interested in what they’d think?

At Lincoln Center with a Bunch of MDs

May 24, 2011 by John Norwood Leave a Comment

Lincoln CenterLast night I went to a big gala party for the New York Hospital of Queens at Lincoln Center. 1,000 people attended. There were drinks and horsdeurves. My wife is a “big deal” at the hospital and that is how we got the invite. After drinks we had a sit down dinner. Then Patti Labelle sang and it was too damn loud. We missed the Viennese table…too bad. This is Tuesday now and I’m so zonked out from last night I can’t function but I’m still trying to work. The contractors are here changing doors around because of the New York STUPID building codes. It has been foggy and rainy for six days in New York but today it feels like summer…

Your Religion is Work

"Bridget's Bardo" Model by James-Turrell
'Bridget's Bardo', Model, 2009, by James Turrell

I just had a martini and once again happiness is a dry martini. I’ve been working on God knows what. We went to a party last night that was two hours away. I’m an old man so it was a long drive. It was for my wife’s 75th birthday but she looks 55; she has good genes.

This week as always I’m trying to finish up lose ends which go on and on because I never throw anything out. God is telling me to make something out of this stuff, even though I don’t believe in God.

Also, people are here to work on the house. Three very efficient guys who sheet-rocked a room in one day. Now I have a pristine white studio, about 30’ x 30’, with three James Turrell-esque skylights in the back. I wish someone would buy all this stuff so I could get rid of it and start fresh. An interesting quote is that my brother in law, who is a priest in the Zoroastrian religion told me “your religion is work” and to some degree that is true…

Iraqi Veteran Burn Victim

May 11, 2011 by John Norwood Leave a Comment

My Iraqi Veteran Burn Victim sculpture made from used (by me) Marlboro cigarette butts was recently featured on 1800Recycling – a dynamic recycling and green living-focused website that makes recycling, conserving, reusing and living wisely easy. The post is called “Seven Incredible Cigarette Art Pieces Portraying People and Animals” by Caz Davidson, and my work is amongst other great pieces made from cigarette materials.

It’s always nice to see your work mentioned. Thanks 1800Recycle!

The Iraqi Veteran Burn Victim is part of my Marlboro Sculptures collection, art made from the leftover materials of my strong habit.
