Marlboro Pyramids, Round 2

June 16, 2011 by John Norwood Leave a Comment

I recently finished another round of pyramids made from Marlboro cigarette packs. I could probably choose a healthier habit but it is what it is and I am trying to make something artistic out of it, rather than adding more waste to our crowded dumps.

Foamed Shoes and a Marriage Proposal

June 4, 2011 by John Norwood 1 Comment

I recently completed an engagement announcement for a young couple that came to see my studio. They scheduled a time to visit after they saw my Iraqi Veteran Burn Victim in a blog post titled “Seven Incredible Cigarette Art Pieces Portraying People and Animals“, by Caz Davidson from 1800recycling.com. The groom-to-be, Joshua, was going to propose to his girlfriend (now fiancee), Violet, and asked me to come up with something. So, I created “Violet Will You Marry Me” out of cigarette butts. Violet did say yes and the happy couple will be getting married this summer. Congratulations Joshua and Violet! May your marriage be as wonderful and long lasting as my marriage with Ruby. BTW… I’ll order the steak for the reception dinner – joke.

They also bought a sculpture, which was a pair of my shoes with insulation foam coming out of them. Thank you. I am thinking about producing a line of these shoes and even having people send or donate their shoes to me so that I can foam them. What do you think?

Outside of aiding along matrimony, I am still working on Marlboro pyramids, which are influenced by Warhol’s soup cans and of course an endless supply of materials from my “healthy” habit. I am sitting here gluing packs of cigarettes together and wondering whether there is any point. I do think it will be a magnificent work but I just keep creating. Anyone know anyone at Marlboro/Altria? I am interested in what they’d think?

Iraqi Veteran Burn Victim

May 11, 2011 by John Norwood Leave a Comment

My Iraqi Veteran Burn Victim sculpture made from used (by me) Marlboro cigarette butts was recently featured on 1800Recycling – a dynamic recycling and green living-focused website that makes recycling, conserving, reusing and living wisely easy. The post is called “Seven Incredible Cigarette Art Pieces Portraying People and Animals” by Caz Davidson, and my work is amongst other great pieces made from cigarette materials.

It’s always nice to see your work mentioned. Thanks 1800Recycle!

The Iraqi Veteran Burn Victim is part of my Marlboro Sculptures collection, art made from the leftover materials of my strong habit.

From 1 to 100 in One Weekend

May 4, 2011 by John Norwood Leave a Comment

Happy Birthday CakeI’m still working on several thousand Marlboro cigarette packs that I’ve saved through the years and making pyramids out of them. 20 years ago I made constructions out of empty boxes and painted them red, yellow black and white. They were one meter squared. I have a cold and feel crappy. Saturday we went to a little girl’s first birthday party and Sunday we went to a friends birthday party who turned 100.

I don’t know whether to paint the cigarette sculptures or leave them alone?

The weather has been very nice for the past 5 days after the lousy whether. Right now I’m listening to Smetena Moldau which is very beautiful! All my life I’ve listened to classical music while working, trying to improve my crappy mind.

Happiness is a Dry Martini

April 10, 2011 by John Norwood Leave a Comment

Picture of a Dry MartiniI had a fantastic week. I was saving parts and pieces from the fire that struck our home and my marina studio over 2 years ago. I am also working on more Marlboro pyramids. I put together one which is exactly 1 meter and 4 mm by 60 cm. These are the dimensions if you glue 12 boxes vertical by 12 horizontal.

I started again on the photos of our travels. I am sorting them and then gluing them into boxes. I had a few Bloody Mary’s with my Sunday brunch and am feeling good. I had martinis the last three nights because I was trying to finish a bottle of Beefeaters gin. Happiness is a dry martini.

I started painting more cardboard pieces. I am using the IKEA cardboard boxes that our wardrobes came in.

Good luck, good health and happiness if possible.
